Every once in awhile, a little friendly competition is in order.
Yesterday, Levi profiled FATMAGIC whose $102 average pledge per backer is the best straight-up band number we’ve seen.
In the spirit of one-ups-manship, I give you…
Connor Christian & Southern Gothic whose recent Kickstarter averaged a whopping $112 per backer!
Kickstarter Rewards Analysis
As Levi pointed out yesterday, it is useful to think about rewards in a couple of different ways starting with the 5 Kickstarter Rewards No Band Should Launch Without.
The Big 5 Breakdown
- $20 Digital Download (36 backers – $720)
- $100 Physical CD + Download (41 backers – $4100)
- Shirt – They left out the shirt presumably because of the fundraising/video nature of the project.
- Album Credits – Sort of included with the $20 DD. Not nearly so relevant to a video as to an EP/LP.
- $1000 House Concert (3 backers – $1000)
I can’t harp too much here for not including a shirt and album credits given that this project, which is for a music video, is slightly different than a normal project for a recording.
The total raised just from these rewards is $5820. This is a substantial amount but only accounts for less than 25% of their fundraising total. Let’s explore the remainder.
Rewards Over $100 (that received pledges)
- $200 – Pair of tickets to a CCSG Show (7 backers – $1400)
- $500 – Tickets for CCSG Shows for life (13 backers – $6500)
- $1500 – Sit in with CCSG for a song (1 backers – $1500)
These three rewards total $9400.
One comment before moving on: CCSG had HUGE success with the “tickets for life” reward. My first thought was about how awesome this is but my second was skeptical given these 13 backers will not ever have a reason to donate like this again. My third thought is that Wait, these are turbo-fans, they’ll always find a way to help you out if you keep them engaged. I would love to hear anybody else’s opinion ~ please comment!
The rest of the rewards total $5000 give or take (notable success with the poster at $50).
A quick review of (now defunct) CanHeKick.it doesn’t show any funny business. That leaves about $2500 of fundraising that was just straight out of the generosity of donors!
The Takeaway
Another project that demonstrates just how important rewards over $100 are. We’ve been preaching this for awhile but this method of analyses provides strong numerical reinforcement for why it is important.
To recap, CCSG gained just under 25% of their funding with (more or less) the big 5, just over 40% with rewards over $100, about 15% from non-big 5 and under $100 rewards, and about 10% from “overpledgers”.
